Nicolas Party (*1980, Switzerland) is a figurative painter who has achieved critical admiration for his familiar yet unsettling landscapes, portraits, and still lives that simultaneously celebrate and challenge conventions of representational painting. 

His works are primarily created in soft pastel, an idiosyncratic choice of medium in the 21st century, and one that allows for exceptional degrees of intensity and fluidity in his depictions of objects both natural and manmade. Transforming these objects into abstracted, biomorphic shapes, Party suggests deeper connections and meanings. His unique visual language has coalesced in a universe of fantastical characters and motifs where perspective is heightened and skewed to uncanny effect. 

Besides his paintings, the artist also realises wall paintings for public spaces, pietra dura, ceramics, installation works und painted sculptures as colourful androgynous figures in different scales, turning the conventional perspective on its head. 

At the Sala Trenker exhibition, Party exhibited a large-size pastel work showing a tree that echoes the imagery of wall tapestries. Like the Biennale Gherdëina explores the creation of possible worlds, Nicolas Party in his work playfully resorts to fantasies relating to nature and captures them on canvas.

Nicolas Party (*1980, Svizzera) è un pittore figurativo conosciuto per i suoi paesaggi, i ritratti e le nature morte, familiari ma inquietanti, che celebrano e al contempo sfidano le convenzioni della pittura figurativa. 

Le sue opere sono realizzate principalmente con pastelli morbidi, una scelta idiosincratica nel ventunesimo secolo, che permette uno straordinario grado di intensità e fluidità nelle sue rappresentazioni di oggetti naturali e artificiali. Trasformando questi oggetti in forme astratte e biomorfe, Party suggerisce connessioni e significati più profondi. Il suo singolare linguaggio visivo si è condensato in un universo di personaggi e motivi fantastici, in cui la prospettiva viene esaltata e distorta per creare un effetto inquietante. Oltre ai suoi dipinti, Party realizza anche murales pubblici, pietra dura, ceramiche, opere installative e sculture dipinte come ad esempio figure androgine colorate in diverse scale che capovolgono la prospettiva convenzionale.

Party è presente con un’opera a pastello di grande formato che mostra un albero e che riprende il linguaggio visivo dell’arazzo. Come la Biennale Gherdëina esplora la creazione di mondi possibili, così Nicolas Party nel suo lavoro coglie giocosamente le fantasie legate alla natura e le porta sulla tela.

Nicolas Party (*1980, Schweiz) ist ein figurativer Maler, der für seine vertrauten und doch beunruhigenden Landschaften, Porträts und Stillleben bekannt ist, welche die Konventionen der gegenständlichen Malerei zugleich zelebrieren und zur Diskussion stellen. 

Seine Werke sind hauptsächlich mit weichen Pastellkreiden gemalt, eine eigenwillige Wahl im 21. Jahrhundert, die seinen Darstellungen von natürlichen und künstlichen Objekten einen außerordentlichen Grad an Intensität und Weichheit verleiht. In seinen Malereien verwandelt Party bekannte Gegenstände in einer einzigartigen Bildsprache zu abstrakten oder biomorphen Formen, welche sich zu einem Universum fantastischer Charaktere und Motive verdichtet. So suggeriert uns Party tiefere Zusammenhänge und Bedeutungen, welche durch die spezielle Perspektive zu einer unheimlichen Wirkung gesteigert und verzerrt werden. 

Neben seinen Gemälden realisiert Party auch öffentliche Wandmalereien, Pietra-Dura, Keramiken, Installationsarbeiten und bemalte Skulpturen als farbenfrohe androgyne Figuren in unterschiedlichen Maßstäben, welche die konventionelle Perspektive auf den Kopf stellen.

In der Ausstellung im Trenker Saal ist Party mit einer großformatigen Pastellarbeit mit der Darstellung eines Baumes vertreten, welche die Bildsprache von Wandteppichen aufgreift. So wie die Biennale Gherdëina die Schaffung möglicher Welten erforscht, so fängt Nicolas Party in seinem Werk spielerisch mit der Natur verbundene Fantasien auf und bringt sie auf die Leinwand.
