Marinella Senatore (*1977, Italy) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is characterised by a strong participatory dimension and a constant dialogue between history, popular culture and social structures. In her work, she stimulates forms of encounter between individuals and different groups and communities, who, in a joint action, develop a process of transformative forces that ultimately spreads to the spectators. She thus develops functional structures that generate the collective space and activate the spectator and engage him/her in the creation of the work itself.

For the Biennale Gherdëina 7, Marinella Senatore produced the Luminaria, an installation of fairy lights, like the ones known from the festive events on the streets of Southern Italian towns and villages. The structure is decorated with a luminous verse from a poem by the South Tyrolean artist Franz Josef Noflaner: “Die Sonne scheint, so lang die Sehnsucht weint” (The sun shines as long as desire weeps). Powerful and energetic, the work is intended as a symbol of a society in motion. Additionally, involving the local community and based upon the local sounds and musical scores, Senatore realised the Biennale’s soundtrack in a collaboration with the composer Emiliano Branda and the Gherdëina choir. Through an open call, she has collected the sounds, noises, songs and voices that are part of the everyday life and reality of the people of the valley, as an authentic audio clip of the Ladin community.

In the exhibition at the Sala Trenker, Senatore presents two series of collages: Exploring new ways of moving while forming new elective communities in the process (2017) and Can one lead a good life in a bad life? (2020). In both series, the artist combines photographic works with texts and with coloured graphic elements. Visually intriguing, these spaces can be seen as virtual representations of actions and performances in public space and question the power, energy and movement of new social groups.

Marinella Senatore (*1977, Italia) è un’artista multidisciplinare, la cui pratica è caratterizzata da una forte dimensione partecipativa e da un costante dialogo tra storia, cultura popolare e strutture sociali. Nel suo lavoro, l’artista incoraggia forme di incontro tra individui e gruppi diversi per creare processi di forze trasformative che si riflettono poi sullo spettatore. 

In occasione della Biennale Gherdëina 7, Marinella Senatore ha realizzato una “Luminaria”, un’installazione di luci come quelle che si incontrano durante le feste popolari nelle strade dei centri storici del Sud Italia. La struttura reca una scritta luminosa tratta da una poesia dell’artista altoatesino Franz Josef Noflaner che recita: “Die Sonne scheint, so lang die Sehnsucht weint” (Il sole splende fintanto che il desiderio piange). L’opera si presenta come il simbolo di una società in movimento, potente e mossa da flussi di energia. 

Insieme al compositore Emiliano Branda e al coro di Ortisei, Marinella Senatore ha inoltre realizzato la Biennale Gherdëina Soundtrack, una speciale colonna sonora della valle ladina nata dalla collaborazione della comunità locale che è stata invitata a partecipare come collettivo creativo.

Infine, l’artista è presente anche con due serie di collage, “Exploring new ways of moving while forming new elective communities in the process” e “Can one lead a good life in a bad life?”. In In entrambi i lavori, l’artista combina opere fotografiche con testi ed elementi grafici colorati. Visivamente affascinanti, questi spazi possono essere intesi come rappresentazioni virtuali delle azioni e delle performance nello spazio pubblico e mettono in discussione il potere, l’energia e il movimento di nuovi gruppi sociali.

Marinella Senatore (*1977, Italien) ist eine multidisziplinäre Künstlerin, deren Praxis sich durch eine starke partizipatorische Dimension und einen ständigen Dialog zwischen Geschichte, Populärkultur und sozialen Strukturen auszeichnet. In ihrer Arbeit regt sie Formen der Begegnung zwischen Individuen, Gruppen und Gemeinschaften an, die in einer gemeinsamen Aktion einen Prozess transformativer Kräfte entwickeln, die letztlich auf die Zuschauer übergreifen. Auf diese Weise entwickelt sie funktionale Strukturen, die den kollektiven Raum erzeugen, den Betrachter aktivieren und ihn in die Gestaltung des Werkes selbst einbinden.

Für die Biennale Gherdëina 7 produzierte Marinella Senatore die „Luminaria”, eine Installation aus Lichterketten, wie man sie von den festlichen Veranstaltungen auf den Straßen süditalienischer Städte und Dörfer kennt. Die Struktur ist mit einem leuchtenden Vers aus einem Gedicht des Südtiroler Künstlers und Poeten Franz Josef Noflaner verziert: “Die Sonne scheint, so lang die Sehnsucht weint”. Kraftvoll und energisch soll das Werk zum Symbol einer Gesellschaft in Bewegung werden. Darüber hinaus hat Senatore unter Einbeziehung der lokalen Gemeinschaft und auf der Grundlage der lokalen Klänge und Partituren in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Komponisten Emiliano Branda und dem Chor Gherdëina den Soundtrack der Biennale Gherdëina 7 realisiert. Anhand eines Open Calls wurden Töne, Geräusche, Lieder und Stimmen gesammelt, welche Teil des täglichen Lebens und der Realität der Menschen des Grödentales sind, aus welchen dann ein authentisches Hörstück des ladinischen Tales produziert wurde.

In der Ausstellung im Trenker-Saal präsentiert Marinella Senatore zwei Serien von Collagen, zum einen „Exploring new ways of moving while forming new elective communities in the process“ (2017) zum anderen „Can one lead a good life in a bad life?” (2020). In beiden Serien kombiniert die Künstlerin fotografische Arbeiten mit Texten und mit farbigen grafischen Elementen. Als visuell eindringliche, virtuell inszenierte Räume können sie als Pendants zu den Aktionen und Performances im öffentlichen Raum verstanden werden, und gleichzeitig stellen sie die Kraft, Energie und Bewegung neuer gesellschaftlicher Gruppen zur Diskussion.
