Through performance, composition, song and spatial interventions, artist and musician Lina Lapelyte’s works enact subtle analyses of contemporary gender stereotypes and disciplinary conventions, while weaving these together with a light-touched, humorous sensitivity. Absurd, constructed situations and liminal experiences are encountered with ease and joy, while the artist’s minimal re-interpretation and re-deployment of pop musical tropes makes its subtle way into her audience’s unconscious experience, persistent and uncanny at once.

In they stole my soul, a stop-motion animation devised by the artist and inspired by the Val Gardena’s long-standing tradition of wood-carving, presents a revolutionary act captured in media res. Like a heist movie, five hundred wooden animal figurines realised by craftspeople of the Val Gardena, reminiscent of a past that saw an transformation from handicraft to industry and subsequent return to traditional forms, take their destiny into their own hands and spontaneously escape the valley and their creators, making a bid for their own autonomy and for an unknown and uncertain destiny in the valley’s surrounding forests. Anthropomorphism, the blurring of boundaries between human and non-human, and feminist critique come together in they stole my soul. Reflecting on its making, Lapelyte was particularly struck by the way in which the valley’s traditional sacred and commercial woodcarving practices appear to have been passed on from father to son along a primarily patrilinear logic. Accompanying the stop-motion animation is a soundtrack created by Lapelyte in which the artist worked with groups of people to reproduce animal sounds through the human voice.

Attraverso performance, composizioni, canzoni ed interventi spaziali, l’artista e musicista Lina Lapelyte riflette con sensibilità e umorismo sugli stereotipi di genere e sulle convenzioni che li disciplinano. Costruendo situazioni assurde ed esperienze al limite trattate in maniera leggera e gioiosa, l’artista reinterpreta e riadatta in chiave minimale i repertori musicali pop, insinuandosi nell’esperienza inconscia del pubblico tenacemente e allo stesso tempo in modo inquietante.

In they stole my soul, un’animazione stop-motion ideata dall’artista e ispirata all’antica tradizione gardenese dell’intaglio del legno, racconta un atto rivoluzionario che inizia in medias res. Come in un heist movie, i film sulle rapine, cinquecento figurine di animali in legno realizzate da artigiani gardenesi - memori di un passato che ha visto il passaggio dall’artigianato all’industria e il successivo ritorno alle forme tradizionali – prendono in mano il proprio destino e scappano dalla valle e dai propri creatori, scommettendo sulla propria autonomia e su un destino sconosciuto e incerto nei boschi che circondano la vallata. In they stole my soul si incontrano elementi come l’antropomorfismo, la cancellazione dei confini tra ciò che è umano e ciò che non lo è e la critica femminista. Riflettendo sul processo di realizzazione di quest’opera, Lapelyte ha preso spunto dal modo in cui la tradizione sacra e commerciale di intaglio del legno sembra essere stata tramandata in Val Gardena di padre in figlio, secondo una logica prevalentemente patrilineare. Ad accompagnare l’animazione stop-motion sarà una colonna sonora creata dall’artista che ha lavorato con cori di cantanti non professionisti per riprodurre i suoni degli animali con la voce umana.

Sich der Medien Performance, Komposition, Lied und Raumintervention bedienend, stellen die Werke der Künstlerin und Musikerin Lina Lapelyte subtile Analysen von zeitgenössischen Gender-Stereotypen und disziplinären Konventionen vor, während sie diese mit einer sanften, humorvollen Sensibilität miteinander verweben. Absurden, konstruierten Situationen und Schwellenerfahrungen wird hier mit Leichtigkeit und Freude begegnet, während sich die minimale Neuinterpretation und Umgruppierung von Popmusik-Tropen durch die Künstlerin subtil ihren Weg in die unterbewusste Erfahrung der Zuhörer*innen bahnen, hartnäckig und unheimlich zugleich.

In they stole my soul, einem Zeitraffer-Trickfilm der Künstlerin, inspiriert von der uralten Tradition des Holzschnitzens im Grödnertal, präsentiert sie einen in medias res festgehaltenen revolutionären Akt. Wie in einem Heist-Movie erleben wir, wie fünfhundert hölzerne Tierfiguren, geschaffen von Grödner Kunsthandwerker*innen, Erb*innen einer Vergangenheit, die die Transformation von einem Handwerk zur Industrie und schließlich die Rückkehr zu traditionellen Formen gesehen hat, ihr Schicksal in die eigenen Hände nehmen und spontan das Tal und ihre Schöpfer*innen hinter sich lassen, im Streben nach Autonomie und einer unbekannten und unsicheren Zukunft in den das Tal umgebenden Wäldern. Anthropomorphismus, das Verwischen der Grenzen zwischen Menschlichem und Nicht-Menschlichem und feministische Kritik verschmelzen in they stole my soul. Was Lapelyte, auf die Entstehung des Films zurückblickend, besonders auffiel, war die Art, wie die traditionellen sakralen und kommerziellen Holzschnitzpraktiken des Tals entlang einer vorrangig patrilinearen Logik scheinbar von Vater zu Sohn weitergegeben wurden, während die Arbeit von Frauen eher der Herstellung von kleinen Serien von Spielzeugen gewidmet war. Die Zeitraffer-Animation wird begleitet von einem Soundtrack, den Lapelyte im Rahmen einer Künstlerresidenz im SPACE in London schuf, bei dem die Künstlerin mit Chören von nicht-professionellen Sänger*innen arbeitete, um Tierlaute mithilfe der menschlichen Stimme zu reproduzieren.
