Coming to prominence among a generation of artists working in Berlin in the 1990s, Judith Hopf has been working with a diversity of media and supports, be they sculpture, film, drawing, performance or even stage design, as well as organising gatherings, such as the salons she arranged with fellow artists at the bookshop b_books in Kreuzberg, Berlin. Hopf works with everyday materials such as brick, concrete, glass, packaging, and straightforward manufacturing processes. Simple and often full of humour, her works invite viewers to rethink the matters and shapes that form our world as well as to imagine their potentiality to become something else.

One of her most well-known works, Flock of Sheep (2013) is an installation of concrete blocks cast from cardboard shipping boxes that the artist transformed into sheep by adding spindly steel legs and drawing on cartoonish faces. By adorning the sculptures with what she calls a “Saul Steinberg-esque” face, Hopf hoped to draw a parallel between the boxy sheep and the way that we ship our belongings in boxes as we blithely hop from place to place around the world—as docile in the global economy as sheep.

Trasforma materiali comuni come mattoni, calcestruzzo, vetro e cartone con l’utilizzo di elementari processi produttivi. Semplici e spesso pieni di humour, le sue opere invitano il fruitore a ripensare le tematiche e le forme che plasmano il nostro mondo e a immaginarne le potenzialità di diventare qualcos’altro.

Una delle sue opere piu note, Flock of Sheep (2013) e costituita da un’istallazione di blocchi di calcestruzzo gettato sopra contenitori in cartone, trasformati in pecore grazie all’aggiunta di zampe affusolate in acciaio e musi spiritosi disegnati a carboncino. Decorando le sculture con questo musi che definisce “alla Saul Steinberg”, Hopf si propone di tracciare un confronto tra le pecore squadrate e le modalita con le quali spediamo le nostre cose allegramente da un luogo a un altro nel mondo, docili all’interno dell’economia globale, come pecore appunto.

Sie bedient sich in ihrer Arbeit alltäglicher Materialien, wie Ziegel, Beton, Glas, Verpackungen und einfacher Herstellungsprozesse. Einfach und oft voller Humor, laden ihre Arbeiten die Betrachter*innen ein, die Materialien und Formen zu hinterfragen, aus denen unsere Welt sich zusammensetzt, und sich deren Fähigkeit vorzustellen, sich in etwas anderes zu verwandeln.

Eine ihrer bekanntesten Arbeiten, Flock of Sheep (2013), ist eine Installation von Betonblocken, die mithilfe von Versandkartons gegossen wurden und die die Künstlerin in Schafe verwandelt hat, indem sie dürre Stahlbeine hinzugefugt und cartoonhafte Gesichter aufgemalt hat. Durch das Anbringen eines „Saul-Steinberg-Gesichts“, wie sie es selbst nennt, wollte Hopf eine Parallele herstellen zwischen den kistenartigen Schafen und der Art, wie wir unsere Habseligkeiten in Schachteln versenden, während wir unbekümmert von Ort zu Ort um die Welt hupfen, ebenso fügsam innerhalb der globalen Wirtschaft wie Schafe.
