Inspired by his own family’s working traditions, Gabriel Chaile makes large anthropomorphic sculptures of raw clay that refer to the visual imagery of pre-Columbian figures. In his own words: “My work is linked to an anthropological predisposition of understanding our own things. I always took myself as an object of study on a visual level and a lot of things appeared from there. I always took what was closest to me first, and that was working-class life. I saw those images, I saw my mother baking bread all her life in a clay oven and my father, a bricklayer, arriving late, not sleeping, not resting much, working a lot. All situations that I approach formally and visually, are a way to talk about that which doesn’t happen in the mainstream of society and which is there, it has to do with life in places that are not visible.”

Brenda, whose name is a tribute to the artist’s sister, is a large anthropomorphic figure made of adobe. At once a sculpture and an oven, with its simple form and ancestral looks, Brenda activates rituals of communality around fire, bread and togetherness.

Ispirandosi alle tradizioni operaie della sua famiglia, Gabriel Chaile realizza grandi sculture antropomorfiche in argilla grezza che fanno riferimento all’immaginario visivo di figure pre-colombiane. ≪Il mio lavoro e legato a una predisposizione antropologica alla comprensione delle nostre cose. Ho sempre preso me stesso come oggetto di studio a livello visivo e molte cose sono partite da li. Ho sempre dato la precedenza a quello che mi era più vicino, ovvero la vita operaia. Vedevo quelle immagini, vedevo mia madre che ha trascorso la vita a cuocere il pane in un forno e mio padre, un muratore, che arrivava tardi e non dormiva, che riposava poco e lavorava tanto. Tutte le situazioni di cui mi occupo, visivamente e formalmente, costituiscono un modo per parlare di ciò di cui normalmente non si parla, ma che esiste, ha a che fare con la vita in luoghi che non sono visibili≫.

Brenda, il cui titolo e un omaggio alla sorella dell’artista, e una grande figura antropomorfica in adobe. Insieme una scultura e un forno, con la sua forma semplice e fattezze ancestrali, l’opera attiva rituali comunitari attorno al fuoco, al pane e alla stare insieme.

Inspiriert von den Arbeitertraditionen seiner eigenen Familie schafft Gabriel Chaile große anthropomorphe Skulpturen aus Rohton, die sich auf die Bildsprache von präkolumbianischen Figuren beziehen. In seinen eigenen Worten: „Meine Arbeit ist verknüpft mit einer anthropologischen Prädisposition zum Verständnis unserer eigenen Dinge. Ich habe mich selbst stets als Studienobjekt auf einer visuellen Ebene wahrgenommen und viele Dinge sind dadurch entstanden. Zuerst habe ich immer das hergenommen, was mir am nächsten war, nämlich das Leben der Arbeiterklasse. Ich habe jene Bilder gesehen, sah meine Mutter, wie sie ihr Leben lang Brot gebacken hat in einem Lehmofen, und meinen Vater, einen Maurer, der spät gekommen ist, nicht geschlafen, sich kaum ausgeruht, viel gearbeitet hat. Alle Situationen, denen ich mich formal und visuell annähere, sind eine Möglichkeit, über das zu reden, was in der Mainstream-Gesellschaft nicht vorkommt und doch da ist, und mit dem Leben an Orten zu tun hat, die nicht sichtbar sind.

Brenda, deren Name eine Hommage an die Schwester des Künstlers ist, ist eine große anthropomorphe Figur aus Ton. Zugleich Skulptur und Ofen, mit ihren einfachen Formen und ihrem urtümlichen Aussehen, aktiviert Brenda Gemeinschaftsrituale rund um Feuer, Brot und Zusammengehörigkeit.
